About Journal

The African Journal of Skills Horizon (AFJSH) is an open-access, peer-reviewed, international multidisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing research, innovation and knowledge sharing on skills development, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and human capital transformation across Africa and beyond.

The journal was launched to address Africa’s distinctive skills and workforce challenges and opportunities: skills mismatches, limited access to quality TVET, the need for lifelong learning pathways, digital and green skills transitions, and the importance of valuing both formal qualifications and indigenous or informal knowledge. AFJSH provides a platform for scholars, educators, policymakers, industry leaders, practitioners and community stakeholders to examine forward-looking approaches that strengthen skills acquisition, workforce readiness, inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Vision

To be a trusted global platform that connects rigorous research on skills development, TVET and human capital with practice and policy in Africa and beyond.

Mission

To publish and disseminate innovative, context-specific knowledge that improves skills systems, workforce development, lifelong learning and social inclusion, including solutions grounded in local and indigenous knowledge.

Aims

The journal aims to:

  • Advance research on skills acquisition, technical and vocational education, competency-based training, and lifelong learning systems.
  • Support workforce development, labour-market alignment, apprenticeship models, and industry–education partnerships.
  • Foster digital skills, green skills, entrepreneurial skills, and the integration of indigenous knowledge into formal and informal learning.
  • Empower youth, women and marginalised groups through inclusive skills policies, financing, and access pathways.
  • Drive innovation in TVET delivery, e-learning, assessment, quality assurance, and the use of technology in skills development.
  • Address skills for sustainable development, rural livelihoods, urban economies, conflict-affected settings, and emerging sectors.

Out of scope

Manuscripts that have no clear link to skills development, TVET, workforce development, human capital or lifelong learning will usually be declined at screening. Purely commercial promotional material is not accepted.

What we publish

  • Original research articles
  • Review articles that synthesise a field and identify research or policy gaps
  • Case studies of programmes, institutions, value chains or policy interventions
  • Short communications on timely methods, datasets or field findings

Manuscripts may be theoretical, empirical or applied. Work that is methodologically sound and relevant to African skills systems is especially welcome, including comparative studies that place African experience in a wider context.

Publication model

AFJSH is an open-access journal. Accepted articles are published online and may be read and downloaded without a subscription. The journal uses double-blind peer review. Articles are published in English.
